A Little Story about “Fair Use” & Copy Rights…
May 28, 2007
As with the disclaimers regarding the commentary tracks found on many DVDs, the following PSA most likely does NOT reflect the opinions or thoughts of the company famous for it’s mouse ears. I heard about this clip on this week’s TWIT podcast. Enjoy. There will be a quiz following the video. JBB
Future Shock
May 20, 2007
The future is here. It’s just not widely distributed yet.
William Gibson*
Q. “How can you tell who the pioneers are?”
A. “They’re the ones with the arrows in their backs.”
The world continues to spin and for the “straights”** one day looks pretty much the same as the last. I can only guess that it looks this way because the Future is in no way uniform in it’s distribution and doesn’t announcement it’s arrival. In fact whenever there is an announcement about the Future being “here,” rest assured it the just the drumbeat of “the machine” trying to hide the fact that they have no fucking clue about what’s coming next, and they’re hoping you won’t notice for all the noise.
So, we’re left to wonder, with Calvin & Hobbes, where the hell our flying-cars and jet packs are…
Worth Saving?

Sunday, waitin’ for service to begin (again). Relationship status: asi, asi. The “Patient” was brought back from the dead on Sunday, then suffered a relapse when we met Wednesday evening. Thursday I volunteered to contact a third-party professional to help determine whether and how we might keep the relationship alive. Still waiting to get a referral number. We said on Sunday that it was worth saving but ran head long into all the difficulties or issues by midweek. I had said on Sunday that if things were to continue than we would need outside help. Sure enough, we need that help. I used to say that I was hopefully optimistic that things would turn out well. That seems too passive to me now. We said it was worth saving. Now we need to do what we can do to save it. JBB
p.s., after no communication over the weekend I got the following text-message this morning: “doc found a lump”… crap…. looks like things are on a whole new level. shit.
Wonder What Leo Would Say about a Flash-Zune
May 13, 2007
According to Gizmodo an unnamed high ranking Microsoft employee told a third party, “if you like the Zune, you’ll love us on June 1st”. Rumors abound regarding a Flash memory-based Zune coming June 1st. Can anyone say “Version 2.0″? Before we get all excited about the Microsoft’s next event for the Zune social let’s take a look at one of the funniest reviews of version 1.0 by mild mannered tech-journalist Leo Laporte:
A couple months after the airing of the above review, Leo Laporte and host, Paul Thurrot, had a Zune engineer,David Caulton, come talk on his podcast, Windows Weekly (#17). Needless to say, Leo toned it down quite a bit. The one thing that came out of the interview was that the Zune team came up with a great piece of hardware in less than a year. Then, of course, the suits hosed it up with DRM, incompatibilities and poor user-interface restrictions before foisting it on the rest of us. Will all of this get fixed in version 2.0? Well, the Zune would have clearly beaten the iPod… the 1st Gen iPod circa 2002. My guess is that Zune version 2.0 will beat 3rd Gen iPod (the one with the four small buttons above the click wheel) circa 2003. So with the impending introduction of Zune version 2.0 all we have to do with wait for version 3.0 for Microsoft to get it right. Of course by then either listening to music will be illegal or we’ll have subcutaneous media devices planted in our heads. JBB
What if Microsoft had designed the original iPod…

New Beginning or Same Ol’ Story
May 6, 2007
Waiting for church to begin, finished with whatever setup I can do before the musicians arrive. I’m feeling more than a little anxious, but it’s not from any anxiety about today’s duty at the sound board. You-know-who wants to talk after church and I’m not sure what to expect.
She emailed me Friday disappointed at my reaction or lack of a reaction about her son’s paintball team winning their tournament the previous weekend and how my reaction made her less enthusiastic about getting together over the week. That opened the door and by the end of our email volleys she concluded that I was done with the whole thing and that was that. So, that was yesterday. This morning she texted that she would like to talk after church, thus the anxiety felt by yours truly. So, is it gonna be a new beginning or the same ol’ thing? JBB
