The Curse of Signs I’d Ignored

July 31, 2007

Long-HairedWriter I’ve written about this before. I’m not sure if it’s a blessing or a curse. I decided to tackle the pile of papers I’d shoved into my bookshelf and put them into a hanging folder organizer. Of course the papers where print-outs of my online journal from 2003 to 2006, and I couldn’t file the papers without reading through a few. So I was left with the question of why I hung on to the non-relationship with You-know-who for so long?

2nd Annual WT Contest @ Taco Beach & Nevamusic

July 28, 2007

So what does it mean when the lovely bartender Aimee shouted, “I knew you’d be here,” when I showed up at my favorite watering hole on “girls go wet” night? Ack

Here’s my twitter summary:

“another Thursday night, must be time 4 taco beach & nevamusic. Oh yeah & some contest with t-shirts & h2o :-)” 08:48 PM July 26, 2007

“Almost home, moist from dancing w/ a contestant, bartenders pissed ’cause of the chaos, my fav had a meltdown after finishing #2. Weird nite” 01:25 AM July 27, 2007

Weird moment of the night (okay, there was more than one, but this one was weird in a very geeky way): Amazingly brave Neva couldn’t remember the lyrics to a audience-requested song so a guy in the audience jumped up with his iPhone, looked up the lyrics and joined her on stage using his iPhone like a mini-teleprompter. It’s a crazy world we live in and the night kind’a went downhill from there… JBB

Writing Notes on the iPhone

07-29 Writing Notes on my iPhone
When you gotta write, you gotta write. First day of last week’s conference I wrote an entry using the iPhone’s notepad app. It’s pretty. I like the font, looks just like a cool legal pad. Only problem is that the only way to get the text out of the app is to email it to yourself and that “feature” doesn’t seem to work. Damn. So, I’m writing this using the mail app, very clunky for an otherwise awesome device. JBB

Vacationing on Arrakis

July 16, 2007

dune house trilogy Beginning week four of my summer break and about two weeks ago (after catching up on overdue paperwork and furniture-moving) I opened a novel that I’d been meaning to read for at least the past two years, “Dune: House Harkonnen.” Thus, pretty much any free time (when I’m not driving, sleeping or working on the school website…) I’ve been spending in the world of Dune/Arrakis. I imagine for most people picking up and reading a novel isn’t a noteworthy experience, which makes sense. So I guess I’m writing about this, in part because because having the time to sit down and enjoy a good novel is… well, a novelty for me, but also because I haven’t just been casually reading a chapter here and there, but I’ve been plowing through the books. I finished “House Harkonnen” and immediately sprinted throughHouse Corrino and am 154 pages intoThe Butlerian Jihad.” It dawned on me when I was at my local Borders the next few novels in the series, in anticipation of finishing “The Butlerian Jihad,” that I was indeed vacationing in the world of Arrakis.

Pat Benatar @ HOB - Downtown Disney

July 13, 2007

Brother Matt and I found a spot among the screaming fans at Pat Benatar’s House of Blues show, part of her current “Summerize” tour. Opening act, Lennon (aka Lennon Murphy), bravely leapt into her angst ridden set, solo on piano. In fact she came on without anyone announcing who she was and just launched into her stuff after taking a quick deep swig from her Corona. Damn. A girl after my own heart.

lennonmurphy I know I’m a weird bird, the crowd was all hyped up waiting for Pat Benatar to come on, curvy Lennon was singing about loveless bar-hook-ups and I’m reminded of my own largely untapped talent for tunes. I doubt that others let their minds go there but part of me was really drawn to the whole soul baring/soul freeing experience of pulling a crowd into ones heart and being with the performance of a song. I know that I’m still in that listless, “I don’t know exactly who I am” soul-searching stage. Damn, I’m 49-f-ing-years-old and I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. I really gotta do more with the music than leave it like a light hidden under a bushel basket.

Trapped

July 8, 2007

I’ve lost count of the number of beers consumed. Aimee is just pouring them as I approach finishing one beer. I actually thought that I might work on the damn school website tonight. Ha! My main concern is not waking up okay tomorrow without suffering ill effects from tonight. Okay, that barely made any sense. Thank God I replaced my guitar strings before coming here.

07-07 Another Saturday @ Taco BeachSo just as I was writing the above paragraph one of two cuties who I thought were with the band asked me about my iPhone. OMG how weird is it when tech helps with the social life! Smiles. jbb

Two Concert Tickets and No Date

July 7, 2007

guitarplayer So I’m in the unfortunate position of having tickets to a concert coming up this Thursday and having no date. Sigh. You’d think that I would have learned years ago to not buy tickets given the less than stable conditions of my former relationship. But then one has to buy the things months in advance so it’s a crap-shot and this time I’m holding the empty hand.
