Gadget Dudes’ Disease, Continued
December 30, 2007
brother matt said regarding my bad luck w/ gadgets that that is a sign that I need to simplify… If it was only that simple #
So, how did I spend my Christmas day and the week? Juls’ computer at home hasn’t been working for a couple weeks and my son is soon going to be moving to Northern California sans-computer, so I decided to put together two systems for them from the various retired PC hardware bits tucked away in my apartment. Yeah, I’m a geek. Simplify, ha! Now my apartment is buried under with the bones of three dismantled PCs in the pursuit of putting together two other systems. Ack.

December 24, 2007
A little twisted, but funny Holiday video.
Thanks Veronica Belmont for the heads-up on this one via Twitter (she’s in the first few seconds of the video. She says, “No, I’m not one of the chicks making out…” Damn).
Happy 60th Birthday Transistor
December 23, 2007
The little device that changed is all. Check out the drama behind the invention at PBS’ Transistorized. (Leo Laporte mentioned this last Sunday as being invented on the 16th… obviously a highly controversial date…. ). jbb
Gadget Dudes’ Disease
December 22, 2007
So, two weeks off, what to do? In view of my recent problems with gadgets one might think that I’d want to take a vacation away from the tech. Alas, it’s a sickness. I mean, I woke up this morning thinking about how i can “fix” things, like when iTunes breaks on the MacMini because the G4 sometimes gets “lost” for no known reason. It’s a disease. I know. I was flipping through some old “pre-blog” journals and i used write a lot more about my set-up, thinking out loud through whatever tech problem i was dealing with. So, be thankful that i only do this like whenever vacation time hits. Drobo, I’ve got Drobo on the brain.

The Growing Tech Carnage Around Me
December 20, 2007
I’m concerned. Things are breaking around me and it’s really beginning to get really expensive. The bad part is that I’ve been so busy that I’ve had to just brush it off and keep going until I find time to deal with it. In late October I had a 19″ LCD start to flash off and on when it’d wake from sleep or at boot-up. Then after I upgraded to Leopard my Matrox DualHead2Go, which lets me connect two LCDs to my MacBook Pro, made everything look green (the red part of the spectrum was “lost”). Then a little over a week ago I was in a hurry to leave and I couldn’t get my expensive Jawbone bluetooth headset
to disconnect from it’s charger and I managed to break the part that fits in your ear when I wrestled it from the wall. Argh… Then tonight, long 13-hour day, I disconnected my iPhone from the audio jack in my car and plugged in my V-Moda Vibe Duo earbuds and there’s no signal in the left channel. Holy Shit! (Fortunately, when I tested the iPhone with another pair of earbuds there was sound in the left channel so it was the earbuds and not the iPhone… Ack!). I do not want to even calculate the technology carnage that seems to be growing around me. Damn… I wonder how many of these things I bought with my AMEX card and whether “buyer protection” can save my ass. Ugh. JBB

Verizon’s Just-Like but Better (Kind’a) Phone
December 18, 2007
Reading
the latest “return to us” brochure from Verizon, I noticed that their next-gen phone, Voyager, looks an awful like another phone released last June (image on the left from brochure). But when I went looking for images of the Voyager on the Internet most of them were slightly turned, perhaps to lessen the obvious “we’re a iPhone knock-off” aspect of the phone. Interestingly they boast a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, differing themselves from that other touch-screen phone [feigned disgust], ah, and the profile also reveals that the Voyager is much… thicker. jbb
