Return Trip

February 29, 2008

The view outside my window was amazing. The Flight from Orlando to Houston was all water and blue. I almost felt like I could see the rim of the world.
02-28 Flight Back to CA

Somehow the approach to LA was a bit sad and it seemed to want me to get caught up in the busy-ness of travel and forget all that I’d learned and the potential that i saw in Orlando. Beautiful but sad…

With a Little Help from My Friends

February 28, 2008

How do I sum up the last two days with Holly and Greg and Full Sail? Kind’a stupid to try, so I’ll just refer to the smiles and crazy idea that I can find community, fun and my calling with these happy strangers. My friend, Mix, said it five years ago. I am an optimist. Now, I have a shit-load to do between now and June 15th. jbb

How Did I Get Here?

February 25, 2008

“Hey Skitch, how did we get here?”
“I lead you here, sir, for I am Sparticus.”
Leo to Shades in “That Thing You Do”

I’m trying to wrap my head around my fortunate circumstances. Yesterday after uploading my lesson plans and agendas for the week I stepped out for brunch but ended up spending a mindless day at Taco Beach. A perfect opportunity to get paperwork done, grade student work or at least catch up on the blog was squandered because I couldn’t concentrate on anything. It would have been a perfect afternoon to “get distracted” with a special someone, but I had to make do with interesting conversations with acquaintances at Taco Beach. It always seems to come back to that.

Central Florida So I’m heading off to Florida and a completely unknown life. I’ve been thinking about this for months and have talked with family and friends for several weeks. Those who’ve known my story most closely tend to follow their congratulations with questions about what this means to “the relationship.” I’m not so sure that they believe me when I quote Michael Scott saying, “It’s all goooooood.” Truth be told, very much like when I was done with my teacher training an opportunity opened up so that I could leave the phone company with six months pay, so both the job here and the relationship are either stalled out or not going where I want to go, so Florida seems like the right thing at the right time. Funny that at almost 50, I’m getting, yet again, another new start.

An Unexpected Sunday Watching the Oscars w/ Friends

February 25, 2008

The lesson here, and believe me, I’m not one who tries to reduce everything that happens to a lesson… but the lesson here seems to be that when one opens oneself to a new world of possibilities some very unexpected things tend to happen. So Sunday morning I woke up and set about to finish the last few things that I needed to do before leaving for my trip to Florida. That done I wanted to catch a late breakfast at the Long Beach Cafe, in part because I didn’t want to go stir crazy having spent the 36-hours by myself trying to get everything done. Alas, the Long Beach Cafe was filled to the gills with the after church crowd and I wasn’t in the mood to wait so I walked back toward home and decided to do lunch at Taco Beach instead. Well, lunch disappeared into a long lazy afternoon and before I knew it it was evening. I didn’t anticipate spending my whole Sunday here drinking beer and talkin’ shit with the locals. The funniest thing was somehow I convinced the bartenders to turn up the volume on the Oscars and we ended up listening to the theme to “Enchanted” and offering our own opinions on who was going to win which awards. It was all very surreal. jbb

Black Thursday & I have an Ace in My Back Pocket

February 22, 2008

band teacher 2 retire w/ no plans 4 a replacement, looks like electives are on the chopping block. Welcome 2 the Gulag middle school site - Black Thursday Twitter 2/21/08

j0178825 Yesterday I crossed paths with the principal. Believe me, with my plans to go out to Full Sail next week, the teacher placard thing hanging over my head, yearbook pages and prepping a week’s worth of lesson plans I didn’t need to run into the boss. So he said that he’d been meaning to talk to me, and then he asked if I have a science background, because he’s looking for people who can fill some master schedule gaps and that the district wants his projected staff line-up by Friday. Right. I hemmed and hawed because I wasn’t ready to say anything to anyone.

Then this morning we had the Black Thursday staff meeting, where he said that we were going to have to move some people. About then I zoned out and didn’t really bother to remember the particulars. But it was the usual Black Friday stuff: funding cuts, dropping enrollment, low test scores, etc., etc., etc. I was really beginning to think that I couldn’t have planned the timing of my trip to Florida any better. The faces in the room were grim. I felt bad because I felt like I was holding an ace in my back pocket and I couldn’t tell anyone.

So This is Life w/o DSL @ Home

February 17, 2008

pcburning I disconnected my land-line last Wednesday, marked it on my calendar 2/7/08 and fully expected to come home that evening to have no Internet connection. But surprise, surprise when I came home from work I still had a connection (even though the landline was clearly disconnected). I thought, damn, these guys are good. Verizon disconnected the landline and DSL Extreme got the “new dry-loop” connection up and running the same day. Amazing. Life was good indeed. Then after a productive three-day weekend, I came home after work on Tuesday and found that I had no Internet connection. Using my iPhone I was able to go to my account page with my ISP and discovered that my DSL was set to be activated on Wednesday so I chocked up the broken connection as just part of the process. Damn.
