Microsoft’s “Mojave” Bait-and-Switch
July 30, 2008
What does it mean when you have to fake your customers into trying your product? You’d think that the most influential, powerful software company in the whole world would be able to promote it’s flagship product without resorting to tricks…
Basically Microsoft brought in a number of XP users to show them their new OS, code named “Mojave,” to get their opinion. Then, surprise, surprise, they were told that they’d been shown Vista, the OS they panned at the beginning of the sessions. My take-away from the video is that a lot of people formed a negative opinion about Vista without having tried the product. What the video doesn’t show was how much “hands-on” time the marks, er… I mean, customers are given with Vista. What I see is that these subjects had formed blind emotional opinions about the product and now believe otherwise based on a brief wiz-bang demo. If I was on the fence about Vista I don’t know that seeing these folks reverse their previously ill-informed opinion would help my decision. I mean, they were “wrong” the first time. I guess if I were buying a new PC I’d check out Vista but of greater concern is the idea that such a powerful company has to use trickery to get people to try their product. As before, none of this engenders any trust in me towards Microsoft or Vista. jbb

Painful Morning, Space-Cadet-ness Silverlining
July 30, 2008
Those following my twitters will know that I had a wonderful experience at the DMV this morning… all morning. Truth be told it would have been a much more tolerable experience had I taken care of the whole car insurance thing before showing up at the vehicle registration place with my out-of-date insurance card from my California insurer and little more than a smile. Dumb, dumb, dumb. And you think I’d have learned this lesson considering that just 42-days ago getting the keys to my apartment was delayed while I negotiated getting renters insurance over the phone. Ack. The one good thing that came out of this whole ordeal was I got a chance to select a license plate theme consistent with my lifelong space-cadet-ness.

A Month of Rainy Afternoons
July 28, 2008
I recently had my one month anniversary of my move to Florida. First thing that I learned was that it rains every afternoon/evening at this time of year. Being from Southern California I feel like I need to explain what I mean by the phrase “it rains every afternoon/evening.” Let’s just say that one single afternoon/evening of rain here in Orlando equals the rainfall for a whole year in So Cal. Holly asked the other day how I’m adjusting. I guess because the rain is so regular that I just figured to go with it. I mean, Orlando in July equals rain every afternoon, just like living in some place like Corona (CA) equals a one-hour 10-mile commute home if you leave the office after 4pm. You either go with it, or figure out a way around it. Besides, there was a time when being in the rain used to mean “indoor fun” for me, but those stories belong in a different section of this blog.
So, after a month of rainy afternoons I’m still adjusting to the concept of living in more than one room and still moving the furniture about. But then I never quit moving the furniture after living 13-year in my one-room studio in Long Beach, so …

Unexpected Alanis Tickets
July 25, 2008

Did something completely unexpected today. I saw that tickets for a October 21st Alanis Morissette concert were going on sale and in the process of checking out which tickets were available I ended up buying a pair of tickets. Given my horrendous fortunes in the past finding companions to share “the concert experience” with one would think that I would permanently swear off such things. Apparently not. When does this penchant for such things go from being optimistic to being just stupid? jbb

One Final Message from Randy Pausch
July 25, 2008
Diane Sawyer announced this morning on Good Morning America that CMU professor, Randy Pausch passed away last night. I heard about Professor Pausch last April when I heard about and watched his presentation, “Last Lecture: Achieving Your Childhood Dreams,” recorded at Carnegie Mellon on September 18, 2007. Just before the lecture Pausch was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer and told in August 2007 that he had three to six months of good health left. He joked during the lecture that he’d finally nailed the venue.
Following the lecture Pausch garnered national and international attention with appearances on Oprah, Good Morning America, and before a Congressional committee in support of cancer research. Much more than having his fifteen minutes of fame, Pausch continued to “teach” through the example he set: bravely doing what he could to fight his cancer and seeing to the future needs of his children and wife. Even as the effectiveness of his treatments diminished Pausch made a surprise appearance at Carnegie Mellon’s May 18th 2008 commencement ceremony:
“The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out; the brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. The brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They are there to stop the other people!” - from The Last Lecture
Professor Pausch will be missed but his message and even more importantly, his spirit, will live on in the students and colleagues he has inspired. I know that I have been touched and inspired by my brief exposure to this incredible man’s life. jbb
