Can I Be Your Lover
August 31, 2008
You can hear the rumble of the crowd and at first the stage seems a bit empty with her standing solo on acoustic guitar. But she charges through with such power and honesty… I miss the girl…

Geek Mindmap
August 30, 2008
I don’t have time to work on my e-Harmony profile or actively pursue that whole thing… but I seem to have time to contemplate future tech improvements of my home system. I originally got the white board to help me map out my FS course plan, but it looks like it’s been drafted to first help me think through fixing tech things at home. Back in the pre-blog journal days I used to spend pages and pages thinking out loud about tech shit that no one else cared at all about. Also, for most, just having a working connection to the Internet, a handful of friends online to chat with and a computer that doesn’t freeze up every 24-minutes is bliss. I have much bigger expectations.
One thing I was really looking forward to when I moved here was setting up my Mac Mini in my living room as a Media Center connected to a big ass* HD LCD/TV. Because of the limited HD space on the Mac Mini I have a horde of external USB hard disks lashed to it where the music, podcasts and movies are stored. It didn’t take me too long to realize that the heat of a typical Florida afternoon…
*NOTE: “big ass” for me means 42″… I don’t really make enough dough to justify a 60″ plasma rig.

Finding Center
August 29, 2008
I uploaded my first modules for my course this afternoon. Sigh. Needless to say, the crush to get the course up and running has been getting heavier and heavier over the past weeks day-by-day. Adding insult to injury, over the past week I got a new 320GB hard drive just dying to be installed into my Mac Mini, a new copy of Mario Kart waiting to be played on my Wii and a stack of DVDs languishing next to my TVs. I’ve been able to marginally keep the blogs going, but some of my favorite sections such as “Sex and the Single Brain Cell” have gone without any new content that hasn’t been borrowed or ported from other sections. I’m going to be very happy when this weight becomes more manageable. Odd that I would look at the coming season of teaching as a time when I will be able to better achieve “Center.” When I saw the following video on one of my many searches across the Internet media jungle I was encouraged. I am hopeful that I will regain my spiritual center…
Alone in Kyoto AIR
Another Problematic SL Presentation
August 29, 2008
Another Second Life presentation, a different set of problems. This time it really wasn’t Second Life itself, but because the room’s Internet access was flaky, my Avatar was stuck floating in the air and couldn’t be moved at all to the venue where the virtual presentation was taking place. Many others in the room never got to even login. Acki.
I believe that educational SL enthusiasts need to continue to develop, expand and improve the platform. But I have to wonder with us still having such difficulties in such an open supportive environment as Full Sail, I find it hard to believe that SL, as an educational tool, is not going to reach the tipping point in terms of widespread usages for quite some time. Let’s just say that the difficulties this afternoon were enough that I was taken out of the powerful nature of this presentation by the two advocates of ed-use of SL who were speaking from somewhere else in the country. I think, for the time being, that the sense of ‘being there together" could be better served if we all logged into one of the streaming video chat services like Stickam or U-Stream and we could see the smiling faces of the speakers and have our own faces on the virtual wall of monitors behind the main virtual presenters.
