 JOSEPH BRUCE BUSTILLOS

I am a writer who worked in technology and education. After working 15-years for the phone company I got a bachelor’s degree in journalism, then my teaching credential and spent the next 28-years teaching technology and communications in public schools in California and Las Vegas and at Full Sail University in Florida. From the beginning I’ve been writing about my experiences and observations in multiple mediums, from years of personal journals, to dozens of songs and short stories, to experiments in photography, film and video making, and online journalism.

I used to think that it was a problem that I wasn’t a one-subject writer and realized that it can be overwhelming and more than a little confusing to someone who might wander onto this website and my posts. Thus, I’ve organized this website into two parts:

  • News/Editorial: This is where I’ve posted articles and editorials about Education, News, Technology, Media/Pop Culture and Religion. This is the “Journalism” side of my writing.
  • Writing Projects: This is where I’ve posted my more “creative writing,” that take the form of short stories and satire. This is where I plan to post my longer form (book) projects.

You can go to the various topics and project types by clicking on the links listed in the sidebar on the right side of most posts. You can also find the topics listed in the navigation menus at the top of the page. I also have another website where I’ve posted my photography and video work: JBB’s Media Projects.

I don’t shy away from my many interests because I’ve found that they’ve all contributed to my writing efforts. From my training as a journalist I value balanced observation, the power of words and good storytelling; from my years of biblical studies I value academics, philosophy, mythology and universal truths; from my years working as a technician and with technology I appreciate the process of troubleshooting and that it’s not about the shinny toys but the minds and hands behind the toys; from my years as an educator I am amazed at human resilience, the desire to learn and that I’ve never forgotten what it’s like to be a bored student continually getting in trouble; and finally as another human being I look for the connections, compromises and the glimmer of hope that many of us secretly clutch in our hearts as we go through our daily repetitive motions. This website and these posts are my ongoing field notes. Enjoy.
