PROFILE

Writer, Journalist, Educator (Retired)

Understanding and clearly communicating ones story is everything. I am a writer who has worked primarily in communication, education & technology. Starting my journey with one of the telcos in Southern California, I used my knack for learning systems quickly to test, maintain and troubleshoot T-Carrier installations and the first fiber-optic networks. Then I switched careers and I used my love of writing and communication and my expertise in technology to engage my K-8 public school students and meet them where they were at. At my first teaching assignment, I designed and implemented a Magnet-funded school-wide video-journalism program. Later I created and managed school and classroom websites and instructional videos to communicate with parents and students. At the university level I used proprietary and commercial content management systems and LMSs to teach in a fully online masters program designed for educators, corporate trainers and instructional designers. Education like most industries has had to adapt to huge cultural and technological changes. I want to use my ability to adapt and communicate to address the challenges faced in modern journalism. I know what it’s like to be tasked with sharing important information to distracted and often disinterested audiences. I know that if I expect them to hear my message, that I have to begin by listening to them and making sure that they understand that they are being heard. I’ve been doing communication for many years, it’s just that I want to work outside the classroom and communicate with my readers where they happen to be using all of the tools at my disposal.
