This past week I’ve been having to send out notices to parents about students failing grades. I got the following message back from a parent (in Spanish):

The truth is I don’t know what to do, this year has been difficult for everyone, the truth is that I would like the children to go back to school and I don’t know how to help my children, all 3 of them.

I wrote the following response:

I cannot imagine how difficult it is for families with many kids to take care of. And I apologize for not communicating sooner and more frequently. We are all in this together. It is bad.

So, what do we do now? I know that there are no simple answers and really wish that we could go back to face-to-face school. But I also have had illnesses connected to my own immune system, so I would rather do what I can, the best I can, until it is safe to be in the same place together.

I know your family has probably made huge sacrifices just to be here, looking for better opportunities in life. It would seem that COVID is another challenge that we’re all having to face and that includes our students. Nothing in this situation is great, but none of the teachers are asking for things that are impossible. We know things are difficult and weird and not the way we want them to be. So, our kids need to take up the slack and show how strong and amazing they can be. It’s natural that we want to protect them and making things as easy as possible for them. But this challenge is their chance to do amazing things. There is no reason that they cannot show their talents and strength in these difficult times.

My class is an engineering class. And engineering is about looking at problems and working to find solutions. This is how this country once went to the moon and how we might have a vaccine for this virus in less time than anyone thought was possible. The people that made this possible come from every part of the world and were challenged like we’re being challenged. This is hard and this is not fair. But our students are strong enough to not only handle this situation, but take advantage of the situation and make “going to school,” even better than what it used to be. We’re all in this together. We can do it. They can do it. It isn’t and cannot be all on you. We’re in this together.

I apologize that I’m having to write this in English and having the computer translate it into Spanish. I also apologize that this response is so wordy. Your student has done well in showing up every day, but he hasn’t done the work required by the course and Engineering isn’t about being in a good mood. There are problems out there needing to be fixed and he’s responsible enough to show up every day (or maybe that’s your doing), he must be able to do the work too.

No puedo imaginar lo difícil que es para las familias con muchos niños cuidar. Y pido disculpas por no comunicarme antes y con más frecuencia. Estamos todos juntos en esto. Es malo.

¿Entonces, qué hacemos ahora? Sé que no hay respuestas sencillas y realmente desearía que pudiéramos volver a la escuela presencial. Pero también he tenido enfermedades relacionadas con mi propio sistema inmunológico, así que prefiero hacer lo que pueda, lo mejor que pueda, hasta que sea seguro estar juntos en el mismo lugar.

Sé que su familia probablemente ha hecho grandes sacrificios solo para estar aquí, buscando mejores oportunidades en la vida. Así es como este país una vez fue a la luna y cómo podríamos tener una vacuna para este virus en menos tiempo del que nadie pensó que fuera posible. Las personas que hicieron esto posible vienen de todas partes del mundo y fueron desafiadas como nosotros. Esto es difícil y no es justo. Pero nuestros estudiantes son lo suficientemente fuertes no solo para manejar esta situación, sino también para aprovechar la situación y hacer que “ir a la escuela” sea incluso mejor de lo que solía ser. Estamos todos juntos en esto. Podemos hacerlo. Ellos pueden hacerlo. No es ni puede depender de usted. Estamos en esto juntos.

Me disculpo por tener que escribir esto en inglés y hacer que la computadora lo traduzca al español. También me disculpo porque esta respuesta es tan prolija. Su estudiante ha hecho bien en presentarse todos los días, pero no ha hecho el trabajo requerido por el curso e Ingeniería no se trata de estar de buen humor. Hay problemas que deben solucionarse y él es lo suficientemente responsable como para presentarse todos los días (o tal vez eso es cosa tuya), también debe poder hacer el trabajo.
