For the next couple weeks I will be posting the Gratitude Journal prompts that are being given to my students and my response post.

Two reasons for this prompt… One was that for the past two weeks my students have been locked into watching streams of the World Cup. Someone posted on one of my streams the general frustration teachers are experiencing trying to get kids focused on learning when the World Cup has one game at 7AM and a second game at 11AM (Pacific time zone). I’ve played the stream a couple times on the classroom projector. Only quality education with this guy. Actually, I have fond memories of a teacher in elementary school rolling out a big ol’ TV when the Orioles were in the World Series (that’s how long ago that was!), so maybe a fond memory is being enabled here. It’s the end of the term. We’ve dealt with endless interruptions in the form of Hard Lockdowns, Soft Lockdowns, etc., etc., etc.

Second thought is that I’m tired of the dismissal of sports fans by the media geeks and technorati. You might have felt like you need to choose (in high school?) between being a jock or being a nerd, but like many things this binary choice is … artificial. You don’t have to choose. You can love sports and love whatever the hell you want to love, like tech and robots, etc. So, be a fan, cheer for your team, be a part of something larger than yourself. It’s all part of being human. Enjoy the ride.

By the way, I’ve been a lifelong Rams fan from the days when they played in the LA Coliseum, back when they would win their conference and then go to Minnesota for the next level and get their asses kicked because they weren’t used to playing in snow. Ack. Then the Ram left for Saint Louis and won the Super Bowl. Ack. More recently I love that they won the Super Bowl last year, but I’m experiencing some PTSD over their sad plight this season. Ack. Then the Rams with Baker Mayfield as QB squeak one out versus my Las Vegas Raiders. Wow. Yay, football.
