The 2023 Pro Football season is coming to a close and as much as I wanted to spend as much time as possible watching hours and hours of games, I just refuse to spend $15 a month for a sport that doesn’t go longer than 8-minutes without some commercial break. Seriously? Aren’t you getting enough revenue from the beer and car companies that you have to turn over and shake all of those loose change from your millions of fans? Ugh.

I think I’m suffering from some kind of false memories that come from when I moved to Florida in 2008 and I “remember” spending all day Sunday at my local sports bars with my laptop doing a little work, eating food, drinking at least one pitcher of beer solo and doing that every freaking Sunday (plus spending Monday nights eating chicken wings and trying to make one pitcher last a whole game). Actually, watching Monday Night Football was a thing before I moved to Florida because I knew that I was working so damn hard around the clock that I deserved my Monday Nights of Football and Beer. Maybe I really picked up the requirement to have all day Football Sundays because of the 24/7 work culture I had in Florida and the feeling that I had lots of disposable income. Sundays and Monday Nights belonged to Football from September to January. Then I guess I went into withdrawal and sadly watched Football videos the rest of the year. I don’t know. I did the Monday night thing when I moved here to Las Vegas in 2016, but I could never get a full Sunday in, mostly because my favorite beer places didn’t serve food and that’s kind of required if you’re going to be drinking all day.

And this year, now that I don’t have to worry about doing grades over the weekend or prepping for the new week, I was determined to spend all day Sunday watching all of the games from 10 am until the night game that usually ends at 8pm. Maybe it seemed easier to do on the East Coast with games beginning at noon or one AND my favorite sports bars serving food, but I just haven’t been able to do all day football since moving to Las Vegas.  And as far as watching from home, did I mention that I get my TV from over-the-air broadcasting and do not have cable TV? Turns out with my digital antennas I get CBS and Fox on my bedroom TV and NBC on my living room TV and that the networks have conspired to only “share” at the most four of the games over the day… So, I might catch one game in the morning and the evening game on NBC and sometimes the Monday night game. Ugh.

I usually catch up on what I missed by viewing the 4-minute highlight videos on the NFL.com website after the fact. That works and is way better than the one-play “summary” videos that the sports wrap-up shows and MNF usually show. You can’t tell the story of a game with just one play “highlight” videos.  But it’s a far cry from thinking that I’d be able to enjoy all day Football Sundays. What’s a sports fan to do? Ugh. Guess I’ll go to Hawaii for the holidays and lick my wounds enjoying the weather, time spent with my sister’s family and adult beverages. Oh well. 😎🍺🎅🏼 Happy holidays, y’all.
