I loved Godzilla Minus One because it told a great human story about how one faces total failure and overwhelming odds without any attempt to understand or “humanize” the monster. That movie was a huge shift from the recent Monarch/Godzilla storylines, where those storytellers felt the need to explain the monsters’ behaviors and actually make them the heroes of those stories. This movie, Godzilla x Kong, seems to be continuing the trend of making Godzilla and Kong the good guys. I do love the spectacle of these movies, which usually requires seeing them on the biggest movie screen available, but sometimes they try too hard on the spectacle end of things and forget that we need characters that we actually care about. Which reminds me, I still need to watch the Monarch series on AppleTV. We live in interesting times. Enjoy.
