The Agricultural Revolution: Crash Course World History #1
When contemplating activities that might enrich ones life or existence one generally will not find “watching videos on YouTube” on the list. When public schools began to offer Internet access on campus, one of the first sites to be blocked tended to a YouTube. We had to protect our students because the thought was that only inappropriate materials could be found on YouTube. And not only was YouTube the domain of the inappropriate, but also just low quality crap that was a huge waste of time and probably one of the signs of our civilizations decline.
As is true of all enormous repositories of human activity there is going to be a lot of crap, but that will also be some amazing gems. One such gem is a 40-episode series called Crash Course World History, which is both entertaining and informative. And I just spent several hours enjoying these nuggets of learning. As a former 6th grade social studies teacher I would have love to have shared these videos with my students. As an educator I’m motivated to revisit my own units on Gilgamesh and Enkidu and imagine how I might present the information in this fun and entertaining fashion. Some see YouTube as a sign of decline, but I see it and technologies like it as an opportunity. Enjoy.
