I don’t remember where I saw or heard it, but it came up recently, a commenter complaining that Sci-Fi shows like “Picard” were getting entirely too political, “too woke,” I think the commenter said. Season two of Picard was a bit difficult to pin down  with the time travel and some family tragedy but also some event messing up the timeline… Interesting, entertaining, I was drawn to try to follow the storyline, I cared about the characters, but was it too woke?

Part of me wants to quote Shatner from his SNL skits many years ago, “It’s just a damn TV show.” Some people seem to take it all a bit too seriously, or even somehow take it personally when the storyline goes against ones beliefs. This reminds me of a sentiment that I learned when studying Kierkegaard at Fuller Seminary. His complaint was how his society was messed up because everyone expected to be entertained when going to church, but enlightened when going to the theater. For me, I’m just looking for the human connection found in good storytelling. Thus, I follow the stories that I love, often I’m drawn in because I want the distraction from the pressures of the rest of my life. It’s not a complaint, but there’s a reason why things like reading novels, or playing music or playing with my LEGO drops off from early August until early June… So, I turn to Sci-Fi.

Today’s video short is a great example of a story so unrelated to anyone’s actual experience that asks some important questions without really offering any answers… Enjoy.
