I love movies, Deb and I met through a local movie club. Movies have been the perfect distraction, entertainment, and enrichment for me over the years. I can be whisked away for a couple hours and see existence through someone else’s eyes (without having to commit to seven seasons of fourteen episodes spread across ten-years!). In these stories sometimes the universe is at risk, actually too often someone needs to step up and save us from oblivion but we can talk about that later… but it’s wonderful when the story slows things down and finds a way to speak to or highlight the Moment. Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is a perfect example that kind of quirky, heartfelt storytelling.

Ironically, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On began over ten-years ago as a 3-minute YouTube video, the brain-child of actor/comedian Jenny Slate and director Dean Fleischer-Camp. I knew nothing about its history or story that led to this feature film. It just popped up in my social media feed and looked interesting. I am so glad that I was able to watch it, with Deb and about a dozen other adults at 9:40 AM on a Sunday in a comfy theater. When real life and much of our fiction seems to be cranked up to “11” and everything is set to “Existential Crisis” level, do yourself a favor and spend a couple hours in a theater with Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.
