Hope that you enjoyed your three day weekend. On your days “off” what time did you get up in the morning? How many of you did not get up at the same time as a normal school day? Start times for Middle School is earlier than start times for elementary and start times for high school can be even earlier. How do you feel about that? Would you rather start later or are you okay with things as they are?

Anyone notice a theme I seem to be coming back to? One student commented that he woke up late on the weekend because he was lazy. “Lazy” happens to be a trigger word for me. So I responded to his comment: My dad used to think that sleeping late was lazy. You’re only “lazy” if you don’t do anything with the time you’re awake 😉

I never really appreciated sleep as a young adult and into my fifties, probably due, in part, to my father’s “up before sunrise or you’re a lazy SOB” mindset. Apparently I took after my mom, who I discovered much later in life was much more of a night owl. Per the video, it’s a matter of figuring out what stretch of 8 1/2 hours of sleep works best for you. I mean, dad was asleep on the couch by 8 O’clock, so getting up at 4:30 still meant that he was getting his 8 1/5 hours. I, on the other hand, am perfectly okay cranking away on projects until midnight… or 2 A.M., thus I was finding it hard to get out of bed before 10 A.M. when no alarm clock was set. I am really looking forward to a life where I do not have to get up at 5:30 after working until 10 or 11 PM the night before. Ugh.

How about you, are you shortening your lifespan by not getting enough sleep?
